The latest working paper in the B/ORDERS IN MOTION series has been published

Borders are not equally visible to everyone and manifest themselves in many ways. They appear as passport checks on trains, as specific border economies, as an oppressive practice that is challenged in online networks, and as a bird’s-eye view from which everything seems small, anonymous and controllable. They are a popular motif on postcards and are also explored in fashion photography. The publication ‘Borders in the Spotlight: On the Visual Representation of National Borders’ presents 19 essays and short articles by an interdisciplinary group of researchers, which critically examine how borders are visually mediated, represented and reconstructed through various actors—including the media, art, security institutions and activist practices. Spanning various disciplines and fields, it addresses questions concerning the visualisation and representation of borders, and how images of borders are used to communicate specific ideologies, policies or experiences. By highlighting diverse visual aesthetics, the publication not only reveals the complexity of border imagery but also reflects on the limitations and ethical dimensions of visual representation within border regimes.
