Traffic turnaround in the twin city?

The border controls that the German government has unilaterally introduced and recently tightened on the German-Polish border are bringing the traffic problems of the two cities of Słubice and Frankfurt (Oder) to light.

The kilometre-long traffic jams that form at the city bridge are not only due to the border controls, but also to the steady increase in small border traffic since Poland's accession to the EU and the population growth in Słubice. It is clear that the transport infrastructure and mobility planning in the two cities has not kept pace with cross-border integration. Not only is the city bridge not designed for the number of cars that cross it, there is a lack of local public transport in Słubice and the incorporated villages, the routing of cycle and pedestrian traffic is inadequate in both cities and subordinate to car traffic.

Students at Viadrina are researching how the challenge of the transport transition in Słubice and Frankfurt (Oder) could be mastered across borders and are supporting the Interreg project 'Mobile Twin City', which the Frankfurt-Słubice Cooperation Centre is coordinating for the two cities. The research results as well as individual recommendations for action for local authorities and city councillors will be available here shortly.
