Workshop for students with Harsha Walia: Migration , Borders, Crisis? Abolition! - Research Factory B/ORDERS IN MOTION
In her work and organizing, Harsha Walia urges us to understand the border as “a key method of imperial state formation, hierarchical social ordering, labor control, and xenophobic nationalism” (2021: 2) and the global so-called migration crisis as a “dual crisis of displacement and immobility” (2021: 62) produced by the forces of racial capitalism, conquest, and climate change. Grounded in a radical critique of imperial, capitalist and racist nationalist rule, Walia not only exposes liberal humanitarian responses to the so-called crisis of migration but also contributes to the horizons of global abolitionist resistance and worldmaking.
In this workshop, we will interrogate the relationship between global capitalism, neo-imperialism, borders, and racist-nationalist rule based on a discussion of Harsha Walia’s book “Border and Rule. Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism”. We will also put focus on current struggles against borders and policing in Europe, and towards abolitionist worldmaking.
Workshop organization: Prof. Dr. Vanessa E. Thompson (Queen’s University, Canada) and Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION.
