The New Wine: Revival, Sex, and Society in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, 1960-2000

Using oral histories, church documents, and newspapers, “The New Wine: Revival, Sex, and Society in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, 1960-2000” explores the relationships between spirit-filled faith, gender, and economics in the context of dramatic socioeconomic transformation in Northern Mexico and the borderlands. This study draws upon the insights of borderlands history and feminist ethnography to offer a comparative view of the Charismatic Catholic Renewal (CCR) and Pentecostalism in the state of Chihuahua, focusing on the municipalities of Cd. Juárez, Nuevo Casas Grandes, Cd. Chihuahua, and Cuauhtémoc. These locations, two urban, two rural, and two in close proximity to the border and two further South, permit a more nuanced view of the looming border and its presence in the lived experiences of spirit-filled Chihuahuas.
Guiding questions include: What relationship (if any) did these movements have with the emergence of global industrial capitalism in the region? Did/How (as expected) they function as a kind of social lubricant, allowing people to make sense of life in a moment of anomie? If and, if so, to what extent, did these movements contribute to the resistance of the emergence of this new order? How did the members of these movements articulate their understanding of the world? How did these movements define and construct gender and the family? What relationship did these constructs have to the re-alignment of the family in the context of urbanization and the creation of a maquila-ready proletariate?
